On September 18, 2025, the iRead program at Washburn University welcomed acclaimed author Sarah Henning for a lecture and discussion centered on her young adult fantasy novel, The Princess Will Save You. The event stood out as one of the highlights of this year’s iRead series, offering readers and students the chance to hear directly from the Kansas City–based author about her bold reimagining of classic fairytales.

A Fairytale Turned on Its Head
Henning, a former journalist turned bestselling author, captivated the audience as she explained the inspiration behind her book. The Princess Will Save You cleverly flips the familiar “damsel in distress” storyline: instead of being the one in need of rescue, Princess Amarande takes charge, embarking on a perilous quest to save her kidnapped love, Luca.
“The Princess Will Save You is a love letter to stories like The Princess Bride,” Henning said. “But with a twist — I wanted to write a heroine who had both heart and agency.”
The message struck a chord with attendees, who praised Amarande’s courage, intelligence, and fierce determination.

Behind the Story: Writing, Themes, and Empowerment
Henning also pulled back the curtain on her writing process, world-building, and the challenges of crafting characters who feel real and relatable. She spoke on key themes of the novel — power, sacrifice, gender roles, and the importance of forging your own destiny.
“Being strong doesn’t mean you don’t feel fear,” she told the audience. “It means acting despite that fear.”
A lively Q&A followed, where students asked about her inspiration for the trilogy and advice for aspiring writers. Henning encouraged persistence, reading widely, and telling stories that matter.
Inspiring the Next Generation
For many in attendance, the lecture went beyond literature — it was personal.
“Hearing Sarah Henning talk about her work made the book feel even more meaningful,” said one Washburn student. “It reminded me that girls can be the hero of their own story — and not just in books.”
The iRead program continues to connect young readers with powerful voices in literature, and Henning’s visit underscored how stories can inspire confidence, creativity, and critical thinking.
Whether you’re a fantasy fan, a supporter of strong heroines, or simply someone who loves a good story, The Princess Will Save You offers more than just an adventure — it’s a call to action.
