UPDATE: MCI Bomb Threat Deemed “Not Credible,” But Confusion and Chaos Followed
Authorities have determined that the bomb threat that forced the evacuation of Kansas City International Airport earlier today was not credible, allowing flight operations to resume after a nationwide disruption.
Most flights across the country bound for Kansas City were delayed roughly two hours while law enforcement swept the terminal and surrounding facilities.
But while planes eventually began moving again, the chaos on the ground lingered well into the afternoon.
According to reporting by This Is Topeka, airport valet, short-term parking, and multiple parking garages remained blocked off until after 5 p.m., creating traffic backups and confusion for travelers attempting to reach or leave the airport.
Police vehicles and emergency responders were visible throughout the airport complex for hours after flights resumed.
Threat Allegedly Referenced Terminal and Parking Garage
Information circulating online indicated the threat claimed explosive devices had been placed in the terminal and in a parking garage, triggering the sweeping evacuation and security response.
Authorities ultimately cleared the facility and deemed the threat not credible.
Some Employees Learned the “All Clear” on X
One airport employee told This Is Topeka they first learned the threat had been deemed not credible by seeing a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Kash Patel.
The employee said the information appeared online before they received any internal briefing, raising concerns about how critical information is being communicated during major security incidents.
To be clear, Patel is currently the head of the FBI, but the episode highlights a broader question: why frontline personnel responsible for operations at a major airport might learn about a resolved bomb threat from social media before official channels.
Nearby Businesses Saw the Upside
While travelers dealt with delays and uncertainty, one nearby business saw an unexpected boost.
An employee at KCI Car Care Center (Phillips 66) told This Is Topeka the disruption drove extra customers their way and that “its been great for buisness.”
“It’s been great for business today — driving in a lot of customers,” the employee said.
Travelers Express Frustration and Fear
One passenger told This Is Topeka the experience left them unsettled.
“This is unnerving,” the traveler said. “I used to enjoy flying. Now I’m nervous. I hate what we as a country have become.”
Political Optics Not Helping
The incident also landed in the middle of an already tense political moment in Kansas.
Just a day earlier, Rob Fillion was quoted by KCUR saying:
“April is going to be explosive for Kansas Republicans — to celebrate our unyielding defense of the Second Amendment.”
The timing of that comment next to headlines about a bomb threat at the region’s largest airport has not gone unnoticed online.

The Kansas GOP has already been under scrutiny following reports involving racist and extremist rhetoric tied to members of the Kansas Young Republicans.

Senator Moran Asked for Comment
This Is Topeka has reached out to Jerry Moran regarding the airport incident and the broader political climate surrounding recent headlines.
We do not expect a response. If one comes, we will report it.
The Bottom Line
The bomb threat ultimately turned out to be a false alarm, but not before triggering a full airport evacuation, nationwide flight delays, heavy police response, and hours of disruption around the airport.
And for many travelers caught in the middle of it, the most unsettling part wasn’t just the threat itself.
It was how messy the communication looked once the dust settled.
