All the feels! This book features the voices of both new and acclaimed Indigenous writers. It’s a collection of interconnected stories that serves up food, laughter, love, Native pride, redemption, music, and grief. The authors worked together to keep the stories connected and flowing! It’s fun to see what they do. Editor/curator Cynthia Leitich Smith helped make sure everything flowed well.
Sandy June’s Legendary Frybread Drive-In is a magical place that can be accessed from special paths on each reservation. Even Indigenous folks can find the place when needed. The place transcends time and place.
In “Braving the Storm,” a grandfather who passed away shows up at the Legendary Frybread Drive-In and gives his grieving granddaughter strength and understanding.
A cooking lesson is shared in “You Had One Job” by Andrea L. Rogers. As the main character learns how to cook for a large group, the reader learns important tips. My favorite tip is, “Somebody’s got to taste the frybread!”
“The Rest Will Come” by K.A. Cobell was a redemption story that had me in tears. It was about a high school athlete who got off the team bus to grab some food after a track meet. He stumbled upon the Legendary Drive-In and had a meal and a talk with his troubled brother. When he got back on the bus, he received a call from his mother telling him his brother had been in an accident.
Byron Graves did not disappoint with his story about a Valentine card. Music meets romance in “Love Buzz.” All those stories and more await when you enter the magical place of Sandy June’s Legendary Frybread Drive-In!
This book is perfect for young adults, folks wanting to learn about Indigenous culture, fans of light-hearted romance, or short stories.
