TOPEKA, Kan. (This Is Topeka) — Multiple educators within the Shawnee Heights School District (USD 450) say James Lee Hankensiefken, 48, who was arrested Friday on a $2.25 million bond for alleged child sex crimes, was still actively working in district classrooms as recently as last week — despite an internal district email describing him as a former employee, leaked to ThisisTopeka.com.

Hankensiefken remains in custody at the Shawnee County Jail, charged with three felonies:

  • Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child; Intercourse
  • Contributing to a Child’s Misconduct
  • Interference with Parental Custody

His total bond is set at $2.25 million, one of the highest in Shawnee County this year.

Educators Say Hankensiefken Was Still Working Across District Schools

Three educators from separate USD 450 schools told This Is Topeka that Hankensiefken remained on the substitute roster and had worked within the past week at multiple district sites, including Barrington Elementary, Tecumseh North, and Tecumseh South.

“He’s absolutely still been in classrooms,” one district employee said. “He was here as recently as last week. Maybe not at Shawnee Heights Elementary, but definitely in the district.”

Another staff member said Hankensiefken previously served as a functional paraeducator working with special needs and behavioral health students, sometimes in rooms without cameras or additional staff supervision.

Teachers also reported being instructed to ask students whether they had ever been alone with him following word of his arrest.

District Acknowledges Former Employment

In an internal email sent Friday evening, Shawnee Heights Elementary Principal Shawnie Hays confirmed Hankensiefken’s previous role in the district, writing:

“Some of you may have become aware of a situation involving former para, James Hankensiefken. James has not been subbing in our building this school year. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact Mr. Matt Hirsch.”

The email did not specify whether Hankensiefken continued substitute duties at other USD 450 schools during the current term.

Community Reaction

Staff and parents across the Shawnee Heights community have expressed concern, with many posting on local neighborhood and parent pages. One administrator of a Shawnee Heights community page told This Is Topeka that a district employee privately confirmed Hankensiefken’s employment history but requested anonymity, while another educator just had questions about access to kids.

“She said he was a sub for a couple of years and worked at Shawnee Heights Elementary full-time at one point,” the page administrator said. “People just want to know how long he had access to classrooms.”

What Is Not Yet Known

This Is Topeka has reviewed court records and can confirm that one of Hankensiefken’s charges — Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child; Intercourse — involves alleged sexual conduct with a minor.
At this time, it is not known where the alleged acts took place, whether at a private residence, public setting, or school facility.

No charging documents reviewed to date specify the location of the alleged offense.
