TOPEKA, Kan. — A fatal shooting shook Topeka’s Oakland neighborhood Thursday evening, drawing a heavy police response and sparking concern among residents.
According to posts in a local police scanner group on Facebook, multiple patrol vehicles were seen racing north through the neighborhood around the time of the incident. One commenter, Kim Hernandez, reported watching six police vehicles speed past her home on Northeast Chester and feared the worst.
Shortly after, group moderator Rebecca Layne relayed scanner traffic confirming a “code black,” indicating a fatality. In one post, she wrote that the reporting party said his father had been shot in the chest. Layne later added that two people had been shot — one victim reportedly found in an alley.
Comments from residents captured both shock and sadness. “Prayers involved for all that were involved,” one user wrote. Others expressed frustration at the ongoing gun violence. “So sick of hearing about shootings. It’s getting old. Nobody fist fights anymore?? Easier to be a coward with a gun I guess,” another said.
By late Thursday night, WIBW reported that Topeka police had arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting. Jail records list 28-year-old Dalton Wolf Thompson, who was booked on suspicion of first-degree murder and aggravated battery. Court documents indicate no bond was set.

Police have not released the identity of the victim, though scanner group posts suggest the man who called 911 lost his father in the shooting.
The investigation remains ongoing. The Oakland neighborhood, a tight-knit community in northeast Topeka, has faced recurring concerns about violence in recent years. Community members, shaken by the latest tragedy, are calling for both justice for the victim and renewed focus on preventing future shootings.
