TOPEKA, Kan. — A Topeka man whose online memorial states he died in July 2025 was booked into the Shawnee County Jail this week on a lengthy list of felony allegations, creating a confusing timeline that raises questions about the accuracy of the memorial.

According to jail records, Cameron Jacob Keating, 25, of Topeka, was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on May 26. Keating faces allegations including criminal threat, stalking, harassment by telecommunications device, unlawful computer acts, interference with law enforcement, aggravated false impersonation, theft by deception, and criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

All listed charges were filed under warrants, and Keating was being held without bond at the time of booking.

What makes the case unusual is the existence of an online memorial page created in July 2025 that states Keating died on July 2, 2025, in Topeka at the age of 24.

The memorial identifies the deceased as Cameron Jacob Keating, born Nov. 20, 2000, in Topeka — the same name and birth date listed in current jail records.

The memorial describes Keating as a “hard-working man” and states he would be remembered for his love of family and friends. The page includes public tributes and condolences posted shortly after the reported date of death.

However, Shawnee County District Court records appear to contradict the claim that Keating died in July 2025.

Court records show Keating was actively involved in a felony criminal case during that same period. In May 2025, he entered a guilty plea to a theft charge as part of a plea agreement. Sentencing was originally scheduled for July 2, 2025 — the same date listed on the memorial as his date of death.

The sentencing hearing was later continued, and court records indicate Keating personally appeared before a judge on July 10, 2025. Records further show he appeared again on July 16, 2025, when he was sentenced to 12 months with the Kansas Department of Corrections, with the sentence suspended in favor of 12 months of supervised probation.

Additional court activity appears in the case through early 2026.

At this time, it remains unclear who created the online memorial page or why it reported Keating as deceased.

This Is Topeka has not located a death certificate or funeral notice confirming Keating’s reported death. Efforts are underway to determine the source of the memorial and whether it was created in error.

The new criminal allegations against Keating remain pending. As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
