This Is Topeka
A man identified as Cody Michael Purney was booked into the Shawnee County Jail late Sunday night on allegations related to impaired driving, according to jail records.
Booking records show Purney, 35, was booked at approximately 10:55 p.m. on June 14 and released shortly after 2 a.m. on June 15. The listed charges include:
- Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs (Misdemeanor)
- Speeding; Maximum Limits
- Improper Driving on a Laned Roadway
Court records associated with the booking indicate an appearance is scheduled for Aug. 24, 2026. Bond information listed cash bonds of $1,000 for each charge.
The booking has drawn attention because Cody Purney is the son of retired Topeka Police Major Steve Purney, a well-known figure within local law enforcement circles.
Major Purney retired from the Topeka Police Department in 2024 after more than three decades of service. During his career, he served in multiple leadership roles, including Bureau Commander and Captain, and was widely recognized for his contributions to the department and the community.
Cody Purney also received local media attention as a student at Washburn University. In 2013, while participating in an internship and ride-along program with the Topeka Police Department, he was credited with helping officers locate two suspects after noticing details that aided their apprehension.
As with all criminal cases, the charges against Cody Purney are allegations. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
The case remains pending in Shawnee County District Court.
