TOPEKA, Kan. — If your Wednesday evening plans are looking a little thin, the Topeka High School Trojan Band has a simple fix: hot dogs, live music, and a front lawn full of community spirit.
The annual Dogs on the Lawn Spring Cookout & Concert returns tonight, Wednesday, May 6, to the front lawn of Topeka High School. Doors open for the cookout at 5:30 p.m., with the concert kicking off at 6:30 p.m.
The name says it all — “dogs” refers to hot dogs, and the lawn is, well, the lawn. Attendees are treated to a picnic-style dinner before settling in for performances from the school’s various Trojan Band ensembles, giving each group a chance to shine in front of family, friends, and the broader Topeka community.
But the event is about more than just a good meal and great music. Dogs on the Lawn serves as a key fundraiser for the Band Backers, the parent support organization behind the Trojan Band program. The group works year-round to provide extras that keep the band running — snacks and meals at performances, support during competitions, and help offsetting the fees and uniform costs that can otherwise be a burden for families.
For many students, the Band Backers represent the difference between full participation and sitting on the sidelines. Events like tonight’s cookout make that support possible.
The spring concert also offers a fitting send-off for the school year, with the Trojan Band’s various ensembles delivering one of their final performances before summer. For seniors, it may be one of their last times marching on that familiar front lawn as a Topeka High student.
