TOPEKA, Kan. —
The story coming out of this weekend’s violent Topeka case just got more disturbing—and more personal.
According to statements posted publicly by family members and individuals connected to the victims, the man now in custody, David Bryan Johnson, was not a stranger to the family at the center of the case.
“He knew them,” one comment circulating online states plainly.
A Second Alleged Victim
In addition to the previously reported allegations involving an elderly couple, new information from local scanner traffic and social media posts indicates another alleged victim—identified as Johnson’s girlfriend—was also assaulted prior to the incident involving the grandparents.

A widely shared post from a local police scanner page states a female victim was:
- Transported to the ER
- Suffered head injuries and a hematoma near the eye
- Had lacerations to her hands consistent with defensive wounds
- Allegedly assaulted and stabbed at by her partner
These details have not yet been formally confirmed by law enforcement, but they are consistent with the level of violence reflected in the current charges.

A Deepening Connection
What makes this case even more troubling is the relationship web now coming into focus.
Multiple public comments suggest:
- The alleged girlfriend victim is a close family friend of the Toda family
- The Toda family’s grandparents are the individuals believed to have been attacked in the later incident
- Johnson himself was known within that same circle
This was not random.
This was proximity.
The Son’s Words Still Echo
This update comes just hours after John Toda publicly described the alleged attack on his parents, saying the suspect showed up asking for help before turning violent inside the home.
His message was clear:
“This is my parents… they are both in the hospital.”
And Then There’s the Record
Johnson’s past remains a central part of the public concern.
- Federal conviction (2012) for multiple armed robberies across Kansas
- 14-year prison sentence
- History involving weapons, violence, and flight from police
Now, he is back in custody facing:
- Aggravated kidnapping
- Aggravated assault (deadly weapon)
- Aggravated battery
- Domestic battery
Bond: NO BOND
Not Random. Not Isolated.
What is emerging is not just a violent incident.
It is a pattern tied to proximity—someone known to the victims, someone already with a violent past, now accused of escalating violence across multiple people connected within the same circle.
That raises a different question than the usual “what happened?”
It becomes:
How many warning signs were already there?
Where This Stands
Law enforcement has not yet released a full narrative or confirmed the additional alleged assault.
But the charges, the history, and the growing number of connections are painting a picture that is becoming harder to ignore.
A family is asking for privacy.
A community is watching closely.
And once again, Topeka is left asking how someone with this kind of past ends up this close to this kind of damage.
This is a developing story.
