“Please Pray for My Parents”: Son Speaks Out as Violent Suspect with Long Record Lands Back in Custody

By Mack Callahan

TOPEKA, Kan. —
“This is a very delicate situation… this is my parents and they are both in the hospital.”

That’s how a family member began a series of public social media comments Sunday after identifying the man he says is responsible for a brutal attack on his family.

“The person that did this is in custody… his name is David Johnson,” They wrote on Facebook. “He showed up at 3 a.m. saying he hit a deer and was waiting on help. My mother proceeded to make a pot of coffee while he waited. At that point… he hit my father in the head… kicked him to the ground breaking his hip… and then proceeded to sexually assault my mother.”

The family member asked for prayers—and for restraint.

“We will not disclose the location for security purposes… please pray and don’t make assumptions.”

At this stage, those details remain unconfirmed by official law enforcement reporting, but they mirror the severity of the charges now filed.

Then You Look at the Charges

According to Shawnee County booking records, David Bryan Johnson (DOB: 8/2/1985) was booked April 26, 2026, on:

  • Aggravated kidnapping
  • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
  • Aggravated battery involving a weapon
  • Domestic battery causing bodily harm in a dating relationship

Bond status: NO BOND

These are among the most serious violent felony charges under Kansas law.

Then You Look at the History

And this is where the outrage begins.

This isn’t a first-time offender.

Federal records show Johnson was sentenced in 2012 to 14 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to multiple armed robberies across Topeka, Lawrence, and Wichita, along with unlawful possession of a firearm after a felony conviction.

That case involved:

  • A multi-city robbery pattern
  • A high-speed police chase reaching nearly 100 MPH
  • Firearms recovered during the arrest

This is a documented history of serious, violent criminal conduct.

Catch. Release. Repeat.

At some point, the focus shifts.

Not just to what is alleged to have happened inside that home—but to how someone with this level of history is back in a position to allegedly do it again.

Because this is the cycle Topeka keeps seeing:

  • Serious offender
  • Serious sentence
  • Return to the community
  • New violent allegations

And every time, the same question:

What broke in the system?

Where Things Stand

Johnson is currently being held without bond.

Formal charging documents and court proceedings will provide more clarity in the coming days, including whether additional charges are filed.

For now, a family is asking for privacy and prayers.

And a community is once again forced to confront a pattern that doesn’t feel like coincidence anymore.

This is a developing story.
