Easter weekend in Topeka — a time for reflection, forgiveness, maybe a little ham — and apparently, for some, a complete inability to respect the most basic legal boundary known to civilized society: leave that person alone.
Three separate arrests. Three separate individuals. One shared concept that just could not seem to land.
Let’s walk through it.
First, Brook Michelle Barger, booked April 2 at 6:40 p.m. Charges include violation of a protective order, domestic battery, criminal damage to property, and criminal trespass — specifically defying a restraining order. Not a misunderstanding. Not a “wrong address.” A full menu of you were told not to be there and went anyway.
No bond.
Then we get to Taylor Jean Eans, booked April 3 at 6:05 p.m. Charge: stalking — intimate conduct causing fear to a person or their family.
Let’s pause here.
“Causing fear” is not subtle. That’s not “I sent one too many texts.” That’s behavior that crosses into you are now the problem in someone else’s safety plan.
No bond.
And finally, Roy Wayne Keighley, booked April 3 at 7:05 p.m., about an hour later. Charge: violation of a protective order tied to a stalking order.
Again — this is not complicated paperwork. This is not tax code. This is a court saying, in very plain English: Do not contact this person.
No bond.
Here’s the part that keeps coming up, over and over, like a bad sequel nobody asked for:
A protective order is not a suggestion.
It is not a “maybe if I just explain myself one more time” document.
It is not a loophole invitation.
It is the legal system drawing a bright, unmistakable line and saying: stop.
And yet — here we are. Three arrests in roughly a 24-hour window, all orbiting the same idea that the rules don’t apply this time.
They do.
Every time.
Look, relationships end. People fight. Emotions run hot. That’s human.
What’s not human — or at least not acceptable — is escalating that into behavior that requires court intervention, and then deciding the court intervention doesn’t count.
That’s how you go from “bad situation” to “booking photo.”
Easter weekend is supposed to be about renewal.
Maybe next year we try renewing the concept of boundaries.
Because at this point, it shouldn’t take a judge, a warrant, and a set of cuffs to explain something this simple:
If the order says stay away — you stay away.
