There are some mornings when you open the Shawnee County booking report and think to yourself: “Well… that escalated quickly.”

Monday night’s entry introduces us to Chelsea Marie Sinning, 39, booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections at 10:00 p.m. on March 9 with a list of charges that reads less like a mistake and more like the season finale of a very bad life decisions marathon.

According to the booking report, Sinning is being held on NO BOND for:

  • First-degree murder (intentional and premeditated)
  • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
  • Domestic battery
  • Criminal damage to property
  • Possession of marijuana
  • Drug paraphernalia
  • Hold for fingerprinting

Which is… quite the evening.

Now, before anyone lights up the comment section, let’s be clear: charges are accusations, not convictions. Courts exist for a reason. But the booking report alone is enough to make even the most seasoned Topeka resident set their coffee down slowly and say, “Well that’s not great.”

But here’s where things get… complicated.

Because not long ago, Sinning’s social media told a very different story.

In one post she wrote:

“If you see me crying with my worship music turned all the way up, don’t panic. I’m not falling apart, I’m just being put back together.”

Another post encouraged people to share a GoFundMe, asking for help after an accident, with the message:

“Help Chelsea heal and rebuild their life — every contribution counts.”

And look, life throws punches. People lose family members, face tragedy, and sometimes lean hard on faith and community to get through it. That part is human.

But somewhere between “worship music on full blast” and “first-degree murder charge with no bond,” something clearly went sideways.

Mack’s not a theologian, but there may have been a misunderstanding somewhere in the scripture.

The saying is:

“Jesus, take the wheel.”

Not:

“Jesus, take the gun.”

Because from where we’re sitting this morning, it looks like the wheel might have been the one thing that should’ve stayed firmly in someone’s hands.

Again, we don’t know the full story yet. Police reports and court filings will eventually tell us what actually happened. And when they do, we’ll cover it.

But for now, the Shawnee County jail roster has another name added to it — and Topeka wakes up asking the same question it asks far too often these days:

How did things get this far off the rails?

Stay tuned.

Because in this town, the next chapter usually drops before lunch.
