Context: ICE Holds in Shawnee County

ICE detainers, often referred to as “immigration holds,” allow federal authorities to request that local law enforcement hold an individual for up to 48 hours beyond their scheduled release. The detainer gives ICE time to assume custody and begin immigration enforcement procedures.

This marks the latest in a series of ICE holds in Topeka over the past several weeks, reflecting increased coordination between local and federal agencies.
