TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 26, 2025) — A Topeka man listed on the Kansas Sex Offender Registry was arrested Sunday afternoon on multiple violent felony charges, including aggravated robbery and aggravated battery.
According to Shawnee County booking records, James Montgomery McCrea Jr., 48, was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections at 3:00 p.m. on October 26, 2025.
McCrea faces the following charges:
- Aggravated robbery – inflicting bodily harm
- Aggravated battery – knowingly causing great bodily harm or disfigurement
- Aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer – use of a deadly weapon
- Theft under $1,500
- Interference with law enforcement – falsely reporting a felony intending to obstruct
McCrea is being held without bond on the primary charges, though records also list a bench warrant from Topeka Municipal Court with a $161 cash bond.
Registered Sex Offender Status
State records show McCrea has been a registered sex and violent offender since May 17, 2004, and is required to register for life. His primary address is listed at 624 SW 7th Street, Topeka.
McCrea’s prior convictions include two 1999 Leavenworth County cases for aggravated indecent liberties with a child—involving victims aged 12 and 15—and a 2025 conviction for aggravated assault in Topeka.
According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, McCrea remains listed as compliant with registration requirements.
