Topeka, KS — August 31, 2025 — The Topeka-based Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is once again drawing national attention, issuing a statement Sunday that ties a recent school shooting in Minneapolis to what the group calls “the judgment of God.”
The shooting, which occurred at Annunciation Catholic Church, left two children dead, 16 others injured, and the 23-year-old shooter — identified as transgender — dead at the scene. In its release, WBC blamed the tragedy on what it describes as a nation that has “wholesale abandoned God,” claiming that no political response, including renewed calls for gun reform, will prevent future violence.
“The destruction of this world is imminent,” the statement reads, citing multiple Biblical verses while condemning both Catholic leadership and progressive politics. The group frequently uses current events to amplify its message of repentance, maintaining a decades-long pattern of controversial commentary and protests.
