By Lila Marquez, Arts & Entertainment – This Is Topeka
Topeka lit up last night with the return of Huff and Puff, the annual hot air balloon spectacle that has quietly grown into one of the city’s most beloved late-summer traditions. The skies over Central Topeka shimmered with color as dozens of balloons inflated at dusk, their burners pulsing in rhythm to live music and cheers from the crowd.

The evening wasn’t just about balloons—it was about community. Families spread out on blankets, kids lined up for glow sticks, and couples swayed to the soundtrack of laughter and afterburners echoing across the field. For many, it was a reminder that Topeka knows how to celebrate togetherness in a way that feels both laid-back and electric. Plus Free Parking!!!!!!

One of the highlights came when the balloons ignited in unison during the famed “glow”, turning the field into a sea of fire-lit color. Children shrieked with delight, and parents couldn’t resist pulling out phones to capture the moment. But for those of us standing there, the real magic wasn’t in the photos—it was in feeling the collective hum of the crowd as the night sky pulsed with warmth.
Vendors and food trucks did brisk business, offering everything from Birria to Pretzels. Local artists set up booths, turning the event into a showcase not only of balloon pilots but also of Topeka’s growing creative spirit.
If you missed last night, don’t worry—Huff and Puff continues for one more night, with more balloon launches planned for early mornings (weather permitting). Pack a lawn chair, bring a friend, and prepare to be swept up in Topeka’s version of sky-high magic.
