Topeka, KS — Another familiar name appeared on the Shawnee County Jail roster this week: Aja Dannee Nicole Morris. Arrested again in the early hours of September 25, Morris faces a staggering list of charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated child endangerment, criminal threat, and criminal trespass. Bond was set at $100,000 for each charge, with multiple “no bond” court orders also pending.

This is hardly her first encounter with the system in 2025.

A Year of Arrests

  • January 7, 2025 — Morris was booked into Shawnee County Jail and sentenced to “city time” under two separate municipal cases (MC24-5502 and MC24-5683). Both sentences carried no bond.
  • February 10, 2025 — Barely a month later, Morris was back in custody for the same “city time” sentences. Again, she served her time and was released.
  • April 24, 2025 — Morris was booked on more serious state-level charges:
    • Distribution of opiates/narcotics (10 < 100 units)
    • Aggravated child endangerment
    • Use of a communication facility in a felony drug violation
Bond was set at $50,000 C/PS, but Morris was later released pending trial.
  • August 12, 2025 — Morris was arrested once more on drug distribution and child endangerment charges, a repeat of the April case, suggesting ongoing criminal activity.
  • September 25, 2025 — The latest arrest added six new felony charges including weapons possession while under a court order, aggravated assault, and threats of violence.

The Pattern

Despite repeated arrests and even sentencing earlier in the year, Morris has returned to the streets each time, quickly facing new charges. The overlap between drug distribution, child endangerment, and now weapons offenses highlights how easily dangerous cycles continue under the current system.

Prosecutors now face the task of untangling overlapping cases across both municipal and district courts, while residents and victims are left asking why the same names keep reappearing.

Bigger Questions

The Morris case is a textbook example of the “Catch and Release” pattern critics say plagues Shawnee County. With judges issuing sentences, bonds being set and posted, and cases waiting for crowded court dockets, offenders are released only to be booked again within weeks.

Morris’s next court date is set for December 11, 2025 at 1:00 PM — the latest in a string of hearings that may determine whether the cycle finally ends or simply resets again.
