TOPEKA, Kan. — One of the most recognizable residents of Sesame Street is coming to Topeka for a special appearance and preview of a new television adventure.

Elmo will visit the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 10. The event is free, and advance registration is not required.

The library, located at 1515 SW 10th Ave., is reportedly one of only five libraries nationwide selected to host the event and share an exclusive preview of Sesame Street and the Great Elephant Adventure.

The new PBS special follows Elmo and his Sesame Street friends as they travel to Kenya to meet an orphaned elephant they adopted online. Their first African safari introduces the group to elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes and hippos while exploring wildlife and conservation.

Topeka’s preview event will include storytime, an African drumming performance and interactive drum experience, safari-themed activities and opportunities for families to take photographs with Elmo.

Children will also have an opportunity to build their own elephant plush toy while supplies last.

The local event is being presented through a collaboration between KTWU PBS, the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and Sesame Workshop.

The complete television special is scheduled to premiere Wednesday, Oct. 14, as part of the 45th season of PBS’ Nature.

Elmo’s library appearance will run from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. Admission is free, and activities are available while supplies last.

More information is available through the official library event listing and KTWU.
