Richard McCormack Schroeder, affectionately known as Butch to those who knew him best, departed this world on May 13, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on October 10, 1939, in Topeka, Kansas, to John and Blossom Schroeder, Butch’s life journey came full circle as he passed away in the same city that presented him to the world.
Butch’s life was characterized by firm commitments: to his family, his work, and his passion. In his cherished Vicki, Butch found a devoted partner with whom he shared the richness of life. Before his union with Vicki, Butch had two daughters, Holly McCown and Carmen Maurer, who, together with their spouses Joe and Randy, and daughters Madison and Gabriela, added further joy and purpose to Butch’s life.
Although preceded in death by his parents, John and Blossom Schroeder, as well as his sister Jeanette Ulm, Butch’s memory will be carried on through his brother Jim Schroeder and sister-in-law Norma.
Butch pursued his education with the same dedication he gave to every other aspect of his life. Studying business at Washburn University, he earned his bachelor’s degree with pride. His commitment extended through distinguished service at Blue Cross Blue Shield for 29 years, retiring as a Disaster Recovery Coordinator, a role that highlighted his meticulous and resourceful nature.
Perhaps no interest captured Butch’s heart quite like his love for antique cars; 1932 Fords held a special place in his heart. A true enthusiast, Butch spent countless hours restoring these gems to their original glory, sharing his passion and his expertise with a community of likeminded individuals. His college years bore the mark of fraternity and fellowship, as a proud member of Phi Delta Theta, he forged lifelong friendships that he treasured throughout.
Butch’s kindness and generosity extended in many directions, but he had a special dedication to his faith. A longstanding and devout member of Christ the King Catholic Church, he dedicated 25 years of night-time 2:00am adoration, an act of devotion that epitomized his commitment to his beliefs and to his community.
Those who knew Butch were touched by his kind spirit, his endearing sense of humor, and his unwavering generosity. Butch’s ability to light up a room with his humor and laughter and to offer a helping hand whenever needed will be profoundly missed by all who were fortunate enough to cross his path. Indeed, Butch lived a rich life. A loyal friend, loving family man, and respected community member, he has left an indelible mark on the lives of many.
Butch’s legacy will endure in the stories shared by those who knew him, the antique cars that continue to cruise the roads as testaments to his skill, and the quiet moments of reflection in the wake of his unwavering commitment to his faith. His was a life well-lived, a journey well-traveled, and a story well-loved.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a service to celebrate his life. All are welcome.
The family will receive friends beginniing at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5973 SW 25th Street, Topeka, KS 66614, with Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated at 11:00 AM
