Richard (Dick) Leo Fiest

November 28, 1937 - January 13, 2025

Richard (Dick) Leo Fiest, a cherished husband, brother, father, and grandfather, passed away on January 13, 2025, in Topeka, KS, at the age of 87. Born on November 28, 1937, in Junction City, KS, Dick’s life was characterized by his humor, skillfulness, and deep love for his family.

Dick spent his formative years in Dwight, Kansas before graduating from Dwight High School. After high school, he proudly served in the Army National Guard from 1955 to 1963, an experience that instilled in him a sense of duty and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life. Following his service, Dick embarked on a successful career as a commercial electrician and retired from DL Smith Electric in Topeka, Kansas. He was a dedicated and respected member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union (IBEW) for over 50 years. His colleagues knew him as a man who could always be relied upon, both for his expertise and his willingness to lend a hand or share a laugh.

Dick’s heart was as full as his hands were busy. He shared a beautiful life with his loving wife, Zelda J. Gibbs-Fiest, who survives him. Together, they created countless memories filled with joy and mutual support. Dick was a source of strength and guidance for his family. He is also survived by his brother Darrell Fiest; his sons, Richard B. Fiest (Roseann) and Kevin B. Fiest; and his stepsons, Jerry Gibbs (Phyllis), Kenny Gibbs, and David Gibbs as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Each of them carries forward the legacy of love and integrity that Dick embodied.

A man of many interests, Dick never missed an opportunity to indulge in his passions. He was an outdoorsman, finding solace and excitement in fishing and hunting. The roar of a motorcycle engine or the challenge of working on cars brought a sparkle to his eye, and he enjoyed travel.

Those who knew Dick will remember him for his quick wit, corny jokes, and the laughter that filled the room when he was present. He was the embodiment of a “handy” man, always ready to fix what was broken or build what was needed. But above all, Dick was kind. His warmth and affection touched all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Dick’s life was one of vibrant engagement with the world around him. His laughter, love, and the skills he shared so generously will be deeply missed. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we also celebrate the enduring impact he has made on the lives of his loved ones and friends.

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Dick leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and the importance of family. His spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who loved him. A celebration of life will be held later this year.
