"John Lewis" Wonzer

April 8, 1952 - June 5, 2025

Lewis Wonzer known as “John Lewis”, 73, beloved brother, uncle and friend passed on June 5th, 2025. He was born April 8th, 1952 in Topeka, Kansas to Lillie Belle Anderson and Z.L. Wonzer. He is preceded by both parents.

John Lewis attended Topeka public schools and graduated from Topeka High School. Known for his athleticism, he played football, basketball and participated in track and field for Topeka High School. During his freshman year of college he walked onto the basketball court at KU and made the team. In his years after college and throughout life he liked playing basketball at Central Park Recreation Center and lifting weights. He was into body building.

John Lewis was a kind and loving person who never had anything negative to say about anyone no matter how bad they treated him. He would say “Maybe they need to go jogging. They need to run and clear their mind.” He as a scholar of the Bible and knew it front to back, cover to cover. He enjoyed discussions with other Bible scholars. He loved listening to Tamala Mann, Kirk Franklin and Shirley Caesar.

He was a man whose life reflected grace, hard work, and unwavering love for his family and community. Raised with strong values and deep faith, he developed a profound sense of responsibility at a young age. Known for his quiet strength, humility, and wisdom, his legacy endures through those he uplifted.

He is survived by his siblings: Agnes Ruth Adeboye, Milford Eugene Steele, Jr., Dainta Diane Steele, Carlos Vincent Steele, Justin Cole Steele, and Monica Steele; play sister, Linda Pipes-Graham, nephews, nieces and host of family and friends.

His memory will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved him
