Gerda Hornemann Skinner

January 29, 1943

Gerda Hornemann Skinner, affectionately known as Gerda to all who knew her, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 16, 2025, at the age of 82 in Junction City, Kansas.

Born on January 29 (ironically, also the birthday of the state (Kansas) she moved to and lived in until her death) 1943, in Mauren, Germany, she was the cherished daughter of Karl Hornemann and Frieda Felkel, and a beloved sister to her brother Gunter.

Gerda’s life was a testament to her selfless nature, boundless love, and wisdom that touched the hearts of many. She was a Christian who lived her faith through her actions and interactions with others, exemplifying the virtues of kindness and compassion in her daily life and as a professional housekeeper for over 50 years.

Her passion for gardening was evident in the vibrant blooms that surrounded her home, bringing joy to everyone who passed by. Gerda found solace and adventure in the pages of countless books, and was an avid reader. But it was her love for playing BINGO, which was unmatched, often bringing laughter and excitement to those around her. Her love for these simple pleasures was a reflection of her appreciation for life’s many blessings.

Gerda’s legacy is carried on by her loving family. She was a guiding light to her three sons, Charles, Bruce, and Paul, and her one daughter, Trish. Her strength (often resulting in being called “a tough old bird”) and formidable spirit were the foundations upon which her family was built, and her teachings will continue to influence future generations.

As we remember Gerda, we are reminded of the words by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” Gerda’s life was indeed a success, for she made a profound impact on everyone she met, leaving a legacy of love and wisdom.

Her presence will be greatly missed, but her spirit will continue to live on in the memories we cherish. As we bid farewell to Gerda Hornemann Skinner, we take solace in knowing that her life, although sometimes hard and arduous, was a journey well-lived, and her influence will remain a guiding star for all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Cremation has taken place and fruit trees will be planted in Kansas, Washington state and Germany with her remains in honor of her life. No services will be performed (per her wishes) but those who knew her are free to hold private celebrations of life with their family and friends.
