The Stormont Vail Event Center was the site of a sizzling showdown on December 7th, as Smokey Dunks emerged victorious at the 2024 Wing Fling, claiming the coveted title of “Wing Fling King.” This one-day indoor festival brought together local and national restaurants to compete for five prestigious titles while wing lovers enjoyed endless samples, cold drinks, and lively entertainment.
Smokey Dunks made a fiery debut at this year’s event, marking its first time competing as a business. On its Facebook page, the Smokey Dunks team reflected on the milestone, sharing their excitement about stepping into the competition spotlight. Despite being newcomers, they quickly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with, wowing judges and attendees with their signature flavors Breakfast in Bed (twisted), Devils Spit (hot), and Sweet BBQ (BBQ).
Wing Fling, Topeka’s premier chicken wing competition, featured a lineup of notable participants, including Doughboyz Pizzeria, Blind Tiger, Longhorn Steakhouse, and Buffalo Wild Wings. Each restaurant battled for titles like “Hot Wing King,” “BBQ Wing King,” “Twisted Wing King,” and “Judge’s Best Overall.” However, it was the People’s Choice award, “Wing Fling King,” that Smokey Dunks took home, solidifying their status as crowd favorites.
Attendees indulged in unlimited wing samples while enjoying live music from The Jack Wagoneers and sipping on drinks like Happy Basset Brewing’s exclusive Wing Fling brew, Blonde Pomshell. Sponsors including Hy-Vee, Fox 43, V100, and Hildebrand Milk helped make the event a success.
With their debut win, Smokey Dunks has firmly planted its roots in Topeka’s culinary scene, leaving fans eager to see what’s next for this standout competitor. For now, the title of Wing Fling King is well deserved.
