Gary Eugene Douglas went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 17, 2025. He was 64 years old. Gary was born to Melvin L. Douglas, Sr. and Ola Beatrice Thurman, along with four other children: Sandy, Melvin, Jr., Sherrie, and Darryl Douglas.
Gary graduated from Highland Park High School in 1978. Go Scots! He immediately went to work for the City of Topeka as a truck driver in the refuge department, where he retired after 33 years of service. Gary owned and operated a lawn service for 25 years, and when he wanted to downsize, his customers begged not to be let go.
Gary was a faithful member of St. Mark’s African Methodist Episcopal Church for over 40 years. He served as a Trustee, an Usher, sang in the choir, serviced the church lawn, and helped wherever he was needed. Gary enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Gary’s pastimes included playing pool, chess, and dominoes. He was also a great skater. He went to the gym Monday through Friday and coached for the Topeka Tornados. One of his favorite things to do was dance — you could often catch him and Lisa two-stepping around town. He was one of the kindest, most compassionate, and friendliest people you could ever meet.
In the last few years of his life, Gary experienced many exciting milestones: his first time flying, traveling out of the country, going on a cruise, and attending a live KC Chiefs game and NBA game.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lisa Davis Douglas, at the home; his son, DeMontre Green (Kendall) of Rochester, NH; three daughters, Jarmillya Douglas of Topeka, KS, Mariah Caldwell (Jamar) of Kansas City, KS, and Aalyiah Douglas of Topeka, KS; his stepdaughter, Portia Faulkner of Topeka, KS; his sister, Sherrie Douglas of Topeka, KS; two brothers, Anthony Garvin (Victoria) of Topeka, KS, and John Green (Melanie) of Liberty, KS; his sister-in-law, Karen Douglas of Topeka, KS; his mother-in-law, Barbara Davis; brother-in-law, Charles Davis, both of Topeka, KS; sister-in-law, Lori Cade (Greg) of Snellville, GA; eight grandchildren, Jaebrion Heiston, Tianna Wiley, Xzavion Douglas, Jariah and Jamari Caldwell, Douglas, Nora, and Nova Green; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and two very special men, Larry Douglas and Horace Henderson, who were like brothers to him.
