TOPEKA, Kan. — As the federal government shutdown continues to disrupt vital services, the City of Topeka has launched a grassroots fundraising initiative aimed at helping families affected by the suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The campaign, titled “Oh SNAP!”, was announced Wednesday and will run through mid-November, offering both in-person and online donation options to support local residents facing food insecurity. City Manager Dr. Robert Perez emphasized the urgency of the effort, noting that many families are entering the holiday season with heightened uncertainty. “With SNAP benefits on hold, many families are facing real hardship,” Perez said. “The ‘Oh SNAP!’ campaign brings our City and local partners together to provide immediate support and ensure our neighbors have what they need to get through the holidays.”

The campaign will feature a “Pass the Hat” event on Friday, November 14, and Saturday, November 15, where members of the Topeka Fire Department and the Office of Inclusive Communities will collect monetary donations at five designated fire station sites. Community members are encouraged to “fill the fire helmets” with cash or checks between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., and again from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Collection sites include:
- Lyman and Tyler
- 37th and Topeka Blvd.
- 17th and Arvonia
- 29th and California
- Topeka Blvd. and Huntoon

Interim Fire Chief Chad Longstaff spoke to the department’s role in the campaign, saying, “Our firefighters see firsthand how financial stress impacts families. We’re proud to be part of this effort and ask the community to join us in lending a hand to those who need it most right now.”
All funds raised will remain in Topeka and be distributed through the United Way of Kaw Valley to local organizations actively assisting families impacted by the SNAP funding gap.
For residents unable to donate in person, the City has also set up an online donation portal via Paymentus. Contributors should select “One-Time Payment,” choose “Finance Misc. Billing” as the category, and enter “Oh SNAP” in the account number field to ensure proper tracking. The portal is accessible at https://ipn2.paymentus.com/cp/ct01.
The City of Topeka is also exploring additional ways to support vulnerable residents during the shutdown, including partnerships with food pantries, community centers, and emergency aid providers.

As federal gridlock continues to stall critical aid, “Oh SNAP!” offers a local lifeline—one fire helmet at a time.
