Topeka, Kan. – Washburn University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sara Stepp as interim director of the Mulvane Art Museum. She begins her role immediately.

Stepp joined the Mulvane staff in 2022 as academic curator and has more than eight years of experience working in museums and exhibition spaces. She earned a doctorate in art history with honors from the University of Kansas in 2023 and has taught university-level courses in art history and museum studies for more than six years.

Among Stepp’s honors are an Andrew W. Mellon Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Curriculum Fellowship and the Chu-Tsing Li Award for Academic Excellence from the University of Kansas. Her work is driven by a passion for artistic inquiry, object-based learning and interdisciplinary collaboration.

“I am so pleased that Sara Stepp will lead the Mulvane Art Museum as interim director,” said Dr. Kelly Erby, dean, Washburn University College of Arts & Sciences. “I am confident her leadership will bring vision, energy and expertise that will guide the museum forward and strengthen the Mulvane’s role on campus and in the community.”

Stepp takes over for Connie Gibbons, who retired as director of the Mulvane Art Museum in February after serving nearly 12 years in the role.
