The Stormont Vail Events Center in Topeka is about to undergo a transformation that will revolutionize the types of events it can host, thanks to a major upgrade. New basketball goals and cutting-edge modular sports flooring are set to elevate the facility, opening the door for a diverse range of competitions to take place.

This ambitious renovation project will include the resurfacing of the main basketball court, the installation of high-tech modular flooring, and the introduction of hydraulic basketball goals strong enough to handle the power of a dunk. These new additions will help the center accommodate a variety of sports, including basketball, volleyball, and even pickleball.

The Shawnee County Commissioners recently gave the green light to the project, authorizing funds from the 2025 capital budget for the upgrades. The approval covers the cost of two state-of-the-art basketball goals, which will be installed in Landon Arena, as well as a portion of the modular flooring project.

The modular flooring is a game-changer, offering a level of flexibility that will allow the events center to host up to 13 youth basketball courts in the Exhibition Hall. And it’s not just for basketball. The new system is adaptable for volleyball and pickleball, making it an ideal solution for a wide range of athletic events. This modular approach enables the facility to configure courts and playing surfaces to meet the specific needs of each competition.

While the cost of the new basketball goals comes in at $56,500, the modular flooring project, priced at $296,044, is expected to deliver unmatched versatility for the Stormont Vail Events Center. Additionally, a repair project for the Landon Arena basketball court was approved at a cost of $44,800.

As discussions continue with volleyball promoters, the Topeka Area Sports Commission, and Visit Topeka, the Stormont Vail Events Center is positioning itself to attract both local and out-of-town competitions. With its updated facilities, the venue is poised to become a hub for sports enthusiasts of all kinds, putting Topeka on the map as a prime destination for athletic events.

The excitement surrounding these upgrades is palpable, and the potential for growth is vast. With this renovation, the Stormont Vail Events Center will not just accommodate athletes—it will inspire them.
