TOPEKA – Governor Laura Kelly has announced over $2.6 million in funding through the Federal Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program (SCIP) grant, and Topeka is set to benefit significantly from this initiative. Two local organizations, the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence (KCSDV) and the YWCA of Northeast Kansas, will receive substantial grants to support programs aimed at reducing violent crime and enhancing community safety.

How Topeka Will Benefit

The SCIP funding will bolster efforts in Topeka by:

  • Enhancing support for victims of violence: The Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence (KCSDV) has been awarded $343,458 to address sexual and domestic violence in Shawnee County. These funds will help expand critical services for survivors and strengthen prevention programs.
  • Supporting crisis intervention services: The YWCA of Northeast Kansas will receive $568,340, the largest grant awarded, to fund behavioral health crisis intervention and community violence prevention initiatives. This funding aims to improve response protocols, assist high-risk individuals, and reduce the prevalence of violence in Topeka neighborhoods.

These grants are part of a broader statewide effort to reduce violent crime, but the investments in Topeka stand out as critical to addressing local challenges and building a safer community for all residents.
