Scouting the World’s Best Parade: From NYC to Topeka’s Miracle on Kansas Parade

As December approaches, excitement in Topeka builds for the Miracle on Kansas Parade on December 7, 2024. This cherished annual event transforms downtown Topeka into a winter wonderland, drawing families and friends to celebrate the season. This year, ThisIsTopeka.com is thrilled to announce that we’ll be part of the magic with our very own float.

But that’s not all. To make sure our float truly shines, we decided to look to the gold standard of parades: the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. Known for its colossal balloons, dazzling performances, and jaw-dropping spectacle, it’s the pinnacle of parade perfection. With that in mind, we packed our bags and headed to the Big Apple to scout, learn, and bring a touch of that magic back to Topeka.

A bustling New York City street during the day, lined with iconic skyscrapers and classic brownstone buildings. Yellow taxis weave through traffic, while pedestrians cross the street and stroll along busy sidewalks. The scene captures the dynamic energy and charm of Manhattan in full daylight

From the Big Apple to the Heart of Kansas

Walking the streets of Manhattan, with its towering skyscrapers and bustling crowds, we were struck by the grandeur and spirit of New York City. There’s an indescribable energy all around with the parade right around the corner where the marching bands play, and iconic balloons—Snoopy, Pikachu, and more—drift through the sky.

But as impressive as the Macy’s Parade is bound to be, it also reminded us of what makes Topeka’s Miracle on Kansas Parade so special: the sense of community in our own Top City. In Topeka, you’re not just a spectator; you’re part of something bigger. Families line the streets, local businesses join in the fun, and the joy is as much about connection as it is about spectacle.

Our goal at ThisIsTopeka.com is to bridge these two worlds, taking inspiration from the best parade in the world and infusing it with the heart and soul of Topeka.

Building Buzz for the Big Trip

Of course this trip is more than just a scouting mission—it’s a chance to bring a piece of New York’s holiday spirit back to Kansas. We’ll be taking notes on everything from the towering floats to the logistics that make it all run so seamlessly. And, of course, we’ll be soaking in the energy and excitement of the crowd to share with you all when we return.

But before we jet off back to the Heartland, we wanted to share some practical travel tips for anyone dreaming of a trip to the Big Apple—whether it’s for the holidays or any time of year.

What’s Next for Topeka’s Parade?

While we won’t spill all the secrets just yet, you can expect something extraordinary from ThisIsTopeka.com’s float this year. Perhaps a music act?  From design details to community involvement, we’re pulling out all the stops to create a float that captures the spirit of the season and the essence of Topeka; of course on a Topeka sized budget.

But the parade isn’t just about us—it’s about you. It’s about the little ones bundled up, wide-eyed as the floats pass by. It’s about the friends and neighbors you haven’t seen in months, coming together to share a laugh. It’s about making memories that last a lifetime.
