On April 15, 2024, Downtown Topeka and the NOTO Arts District will officially open two new Common Consumption Areas (CCAs), following the City of Topeka Governing Body’s approval in December 2023. These designated zones allow patrons to enjoy alcoholic beverages outside of bars and restaurants, creating “social drinking zones” within specified boundaries, as long as the drinks are purchased from licensed establishments.
The Downtown Topeka CCA is bounded by 4th Street to the north, 10th Avenue to the south, Quincy Street to the east, and Jackson Street to the west. The NOTO Arts District CCA is bordered by Fairchild Street to the north, Norris Street to the south, Quincy Street to the east, and Jackson Street to the west.
Both CCAs will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., seven days a week. Clear signage and pavement markings will delineate the CCA boundaries. Patrons must purchase alcoholic beverages within the designated areas from participating businesses, and the beverages must be sold in non-glass containers marked with the establishment’s logo or branding.
“Common Consumption is a natural evolution of our continued development efforts to support businesses while providing exciting environments for Topekans,” said Councilman Spencer Duncan. This new initiative reflects Topeka’s commitment to fostering vibrant, accessible spaces for both locals and visitors.
